Mallory Court Hotel Map
This painting, the Mallory Court Hotel Map, was commissioned for the enjoyment of guests by the delightful country house hotel of the same name in Warwickshire.
I had previously painted a map of its sister hotel, The Arden in Stratford-upon-Avon, to help guests find their way around the town. The guests loved it, so the hotels’ marketing team approached me again. They asked me to paint a map of Mallory Court near Leamington Spa to help guests find their way around the grounds. I was invited to meet the marketing team, Tara and Lisa, to talk more about what they wanted the map for. They gave me not only a lovely pot of tea, but also a guided tour. This helped me to get under the skin of the hotel and discover its many delightful rooms, its history and its ethos.
The main house – a 19th century gabled ivy-covered building – stands at the centre of a gardener’s dream. It’s surrounded by stripey lawns and clipped hedges, swirling topiary, herbaceous and floral borders, walled gardens, and stately lines of mature native trees. When I visited on a dull wet day in January 2017, construction of a fabulous new Spa facility was almost complete. This, of course, was to be included on the painting.
Mallory Court’s marketing team instructed me on the vital elements to include in the picture, but they also understood that they would need to give me, as the artist, carte blanche to make the painting ‘my way’. They already knew my colourful and quirky style, and essentially let me get on with it. As I drew and painted, I took photos of the work inviting their feedback at all stages (with the proviso that changes of mind were out the question. Once inked or painted in, there’s no going back!). They trusted me to come up with something bright, unique, comfortable, and easy to look at – much like the hotel, in fact! This made it a joy to for me to paint. I hope that guests will enjoy using my Mallory Court Hotel map as much as I enjoyed painting it.
