This handsome bird is the pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) and is common around waterways throughout Africa and Asia. They are one of the few species that can actually maintain a prolonged hover, which is how they fish, rather than from a perch. We saw this one at Kotu Bridge in Gambia, West Africa in 2014, which is where I first fell in love with this species many years ago. They are always a thrill to watch.
