A starling (Sturnus vulgaris) rests on the stem of a phragmites reed at the edge of a reedbed.
In the winter these birds gather at sunset in vast numbers wherever there are reedbeds for them to safely roost in. We see them near our home in Oxfordshire where there are many wetlands, and also at RSPB Otmoor, where the starling murmurations are a internationally renowned spectacle.
Here’s a little footage that my brother shot on his phone in February 2015 of a glorious murmuration near Stanton Harcourt. What’s not to like about starlings?!
