A painting of three European starlings flying through a dark starry sky, echoed by the stars on their breasts. This painting is part of a series called ‘The Starling Variations’.
The European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) hangs out in large flocks, especially in winter, forming murmurations of thousands of birds. They know there is safety in numbers, so they roost together overnight in reedbeds, gathering at dusk before settling down for the night.
