“Blackthorn at the foot of the lane” is a view of the lane where we live, in Springtime. I love to walk the lane every day and watch as it changes through the seasons.

Peeping out through the twigs, branches and emerging leaves is the graceful spire of the church of St Peter & St Paul at Church Hanborough.

The blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) is such a wonderful tangly low growing tree, spilling out its white frothy blossoms along the hedgerows. Some people know this tree as the sloe. It produces little black fruits in the autumn which can be used for flavouring gin.
