This little spot is one of my favourite places in the whole world! The Wharf Stream is an ancient channel known as a ‘flash lock’. cut centuries ago and used to transport heavy goods from the river Thames towards Eynsham in West Oxfordshire. It only stopped functioning recently – at the end of the 19th century. Now, it’s an abandoned channel barely navigable (although you can get through in a canoe, as I’ve done this) and is choked with lilies and reeds and all manner of water plants. I think it’s utterly enchanting. Signs of otters have been spotted here.

Painted in late June 2020 as lockdown eased.
