Cherhill lookout was a commission. Doug emailed me. He wanted me to paint a different view of the landscape around Cherhill in Wiltshire where he lives, as a surprise gift for his wife. It shows a barn owl looking out over his territory, which includes the Cherhill downs, looking over towards Avebury and Silbury Hill.
After Doug gave the picture to his wife, he said: “She really can’t stop looking at it – I keep catching her standing in front of it!”
This painting celebrates the incredible work of my hero, the scandalously unsung Alfred Russel Wallace. Wallace came up with the theory of natural selection independently of Darwin and established the study of biogeography.
This painting is no longer available, and is shown here for your viewing pleasure and for the glory of Wallace.
