The view over White Horse Hill, near Uffington in Oxfordshire, is one that I paint time after time. It’s a very special place to me and many others. I met my husband there. It’s where we scattered to the wind the ashes of my best friend. It’s where we used to take the children to run around when they were tiny. It’s the highest point in the county. It’s good to sit in the long grass up there in the summer and feel the breeze blow the cobwebs away.
The white horse was cut into the chalky hillside about 3,500 years ago by our Bronze Age ancestors who lived there. It was probably their token animal. It is the oldest chalk hill figure in the country. There are many white horses in nearby Wiltshire but they are all modern, mostly cut in the 19th century. This is the loveliest as it has also been sculpted by time.
I spotted a big brown hare in a field margin just outside our village. I'd gone out to admire the hawthorn blossom and cow parsley in the verges, but this lovely creature made my day!

This painting was a gift to my flame-haired nephew, whose totem animal is a red fox, and is shown here for your viewing pleasure.
