These greetings card feature my painting Mockingbird including the bombshell quote “I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks.”
In Harper Lee’s classic 1960 novel of prejudice, violence and forgiveness To Kill a Mockingbird which I blogged about here, young siblings Scout and Jem are in discussion:
You know something, Scout? I’ve got it all figured out, now. There’s four kinds of folks in the world. There’s the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there’s the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes.
“Naw, Jem, I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks.”
Jem is trying to make sense of the prejudice he sees all around him, and groups people according to the discrimination he witnesses each day. But Scout has got it sussed. We are all just people. Be kind. Be respectful.
