Wrong kind of cliff

“Wrong kind of cliff” is a painting of an Atlantic puffin and a Clarice Cliff “Circle Tree” teacup.

It’s a simple visual pun inspired by a summer looking at seabirds on cliffs, painting seabirds, and painting teacups. This combines the two. I have taken the colours of Cliff’s “Circle Tree” teacup and applied them in a folk art across the composition.

Clarice Cliff (1899 – 1972) was a prolific Staffordshire ceramic designer. Her richly coloured designs combine abstract, geometric and figurative forms in an Art Deco style. It was immediately immensely popular and still is. Her work is highly collectable.
