The sunlit part of the moon determines the moon phases that we see from earth every month. There are eight lunar phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent. And in my painting, I've included a ninth phase - the next new moon. This cycle repeats every 29.53 days.

I've illustrated each moon phase as follows:

  • new moon - a short-eared owl hunting voles in a field in Gloucestershire
  • waxing crescent -the milky way over Pentre Ifan Neolithic burial chamber in Pembrokeshire.
  • first quarter - a privet hawk moth and a scarlet tiger moth sipping nectar from honeysuckle
  • waxing gibbous - an adaptation of van Gogh's Starry Night'
  • full moon - coral spawning on a reef. Corals time their spawning to co-incide with a full moon (combined with water temperature, day length and other factors)
  • waning gibbous - a murmuration of starlings over Eynsham
  • third quarter - a boat trip to see sea birds. I've shown Wilson's storm petrels and manx shearwaters
  • waning crescent - the northern lights at Callanish ancient monument on the Isle of Lewis
  • new moon - a lighthouse in a stormy sea with waves whipped up like white horses.

This website takes orders from UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

If you are not in these countries and you would like to make a purchase, please get in touch with me directly.

Posting your order

Typically, orders for physical products placed after 12pm on Friday, and on Saturday or Sunday will not be posted until Monday at the earliest. I use Royal Mail to dispatch your order.

If you have ordered multiple items, I will try to post everything together. Occasionally, this is not possible, in which case they will be dispatched in separate packages.

Digital files will typically be transferred to customers within 24 hours via email using WeTransfer, the file transfer website.
