About Butterflies in the Garden

Just two years ago, I turned a quarter of our garden over to (mostly) native species of wildflowers. I hoped to attract all kinds of insects and other wildlife into the garden, as well as increasing biodiversity and giving me something beautiful and interesting to enjoy. My plan worked! We have so many small mammals, birds, amphibians and insects, including loads of butterflies. We have a meadow opposite our house so some of the species may have come from there. But the fact is I have I spotted more than the 12 species that I have illustrated in my painting ‘Butterflies in the Garden’. The butterflies shown are common blue, peacock, orange tip, ringlet, small tortoiseshell, painted laduy, comma, meadow brown, marbled white, red admiral, brimstone and gatekeeper.
