About Four Colly Birds
“Four Colly Birds” is a watercolour painting made as a design for a festive greetings card. The title is from the Christmas carol ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’.
I’ve painted it in a loose Scandinavian folk art style. As with all my Christmas card designs, I generally shun the ‘traditional’ trappings of Christmas and go for something secular, often using very unChristmassy colours. In this case I chose a palette of deep purples and magentas.
Some people sing the lyric ‘four calling birds’ but I have used the older word ‘colly’. Colly = black, like coal, therefore blackbirds. And to prevent argument, all my blackbirds are calling anyway!
