About “She whispered her name was Joy”
“She whispered her name was Joy”- is a watercolour painting of a magpie with fairies and promise of spring.
I made three paper mache magpies, two of which immediately found a home, leaving me with just one… “for sorrow”. But I didn’t mind, because I am not in the least bit superstitious, and because I thought, well… her name must be Joy. “She whispered her name was Joy” sounded like a poetic idea from a children’s storybook, and it might be fun to imagine that and have a crack at painting it. With a little help from Vincent van Gogh who inspired the almond blossom branch, I made a painting full of hope, the promise of new life, and the joys of spring. A couple of little faery folk emerging from a carpet of wood anemones give it a kind of storybook magic and someone for the magpie to whisper her name to.
