Pigeon House Lane, where I live, in early April is utterly beautiful!
It’s a single-track, sunken lane of no more than a mile in length between Church Hanborough and Freeland in West Oxfordshire. Twisting and turning its way down into a tiny valley, its deep tall hedgerows are made up of old oaks and birches, hawthorns and hazels, tangled with ivy, brambles and undergrowth. Its steep dark verges are bejewelled with wildflowers; in April, celandines, stitchwort and bluebells rush to bloom before the canopy closes over.
High up in the branches chiff chaffs, blackcaps, robins, nuthatches, tits and blackbirds sing their songs.
In my painting I have shown the section as you exit Freeland, just before the lane dips down into the valley.
