In 2024 we took a longed-for and long-awaited trip to Brazil. As well as jaguars and anteaters, we wanted to see the extraordinary variety of bird species - all shapes, all sizes, and all the colours of the rainbow!
The 20 species of birds that I've illustrated in 'All the colours of the rainforest' are those that we observed. My husband took more than ten thousand photos on our trip, so I had plenty of visual reference material to work from. The birds I've painted (going roughly from left to right) are:
- Violaceous euphonia (top left)
- Squirrel cuckoo
- Festive coquette (top right)
- Green headed tanager
- Amethyst woodstar
- Chestnut eared aracari
- American pygmy kingfisher
- Campo flicker
- Plush crested jay
- Brazilian tanager
- Peach fronted parakeet (centre)
- Ochre collared piculet
- Black throated trogon
- Rufous headed tanager
- Ariel (channel-billed) toucan
- Rufous tailed jacamar (bottom left)
- Eared pygmy tyrant
- Red necked tanager
- Blue manakin
- Brassy breasted tanager (bottom right)
All the colours of the rainforest shows the birds at relative sizes. For example, the ariel toucan is the largest bird shown and the amethyst woodstar the tiniest.
We stayed at various lodges in the Pantanal, and also at Espinheiro Negro Lodge, a three hour drive south of Sao Paulo in the Atlantic rainforest. Highly recommended!
