Which ancient sites are on the map?
Oxfordshire is surprisingly well endowed with ancient monuments. I have painted 14 of what I consider to be the main megalithic sites. Plus one or two that even many Oxfordshire locals may not be aware of.
- Rollright Stones - stone circle
- Whispering Knights - remains of a burial chamber
- King Stone - standing stone
- Thorstone - standing stone
- Hawkstone - standing stone
- Hoarstone - remains of a burial chamber
- Devil's Quoits - henge and stone circle
- Wayland's Smithy
- Dragon Hill - artificial mound
- Uffington White Horse - chalk hill figure
- Blowing Stone - megalith
- Blewburton Hill - hillfort
- Wittenham Clumps - hillfort
- Ridgeway - ancient highway
Many of these places hold a very special significance for me (for example, I met my husband at the Uffington White Horse) and I'm sure many people will remember good times with friends and family visiting these sites.
Can you feel the magic?
Oxfordshire's greatest asset, is clearly the Thames. Our Neolithic and Bronze Age ancestors knew this. That's why they hunted, settled, farmed and lived here. They built these monuments thousands of years ago to honour their dead, maybe have festivals, trading events and marriage markets, track seasonal changes, mark a way or a territorial boundary.
The astonishing thing is that they are still here. Still respected. Still honoured. In the hurly burly and chaos of 21st century life, the Ancients' constructions offer we Moderns a place of safety, quiet and grounding. Perhaps even magic?
Note: Clearly, the idea of 'Oxfordshire' as an administrative area is a modern construct.
Other things I've included in my hand painted map
Everything is better when a bird is included, right? That includes ancient sites. I always see skylarks and red kites at these places. And sometimes a stonechat. That's the little bird sitting on the title text. Ravens are common in Oxfordshire and there is folklore about ravens at the Wittenham Clumps, which is why my raven is there.
I've included a snake's head fritillary, the county flower of Oxfordshire.
