Map of Mull - a painting of the Isle of Mull, Scotland
The Isle of Mull, on the west coast of Scotland, is the second largest island of the Hebrides.
In my illustrated painting, you'll see some of the settlements, history, geography and natural wonders to be found on Mull.
An original painting in watercolour, size 730mm x 520mm on 600gsm cotton rag paper
- A2 size signed poster prints
- Digital file for you to make a single print at a format and size of your choice
- I also have coasters, jigsaw puzzles, and tea towels of this painting.
Why paint a map of Mull?
I first visited Mull on a family holiday way back in 1972. I've returned a many times since, most recently in 2023.
It's got everything I love: history, varied landscapes, lighthouses, puffins, boats, horses to ride, rainbows, friendly people, cake shops, a sense of community, and it's packed with wildlife. Mull is well known for its eagles - golden and white tailed. The latter were reintroduced in the 1980s and now self-sustain as a population.
What's on my map of Mull?
My Map of Mull charts the main settlements and notable features: the regular ferries, Glenforsa airstrip, Eas Fors waterfall and Lochbuie Neolithic stone circle. Outlying islands shown include: the Treshnish Isles, which is home to a breeding seabird colony; Staffa, where Fingal's Cave is, and of course Iona. This is where St Cuthbert founded a monastery.
Mull wildlife
My map shows some of the many wonderful wild creatures you can see. Birds illustrated are: golden eagle, white tailed eagle, crossbill, hen harrier, puffin, curlew, gannet, corncrake, eider. Mammals shown: otter, red deer, pine marten, highland cow, mountain hare, common dolphin, grey seal and minke whale.
My Map of Mull shows me riding Smokey, a Highland pony, alongside Jean from Mull Pony Trekking.
Jean and I have ridden out together a few times and we always have fun. I have spotted all kinds of wildlife while riding. Galloping through the sea at the top end of Loch Na Keal is the only time I have seen flounders swim away from beneath the hoofs of my mount!
The Tobermory Whisky, the Macquarie Mausoleum at Gruline (which will be of particular interest to Australians), Duart Castle, Glengorm Hotel, Tobermory lighthouse and Lismore lighthouses, and of course, a lifeboat heading out from RNLI Tobermory en route to save lives and keep us safe from the sea.
My husband's photographs of our trips to Mull have been a vital source of visual information while painting this map.
