What is Wayland's Smithy?

Wayland's Smithy long barrow is a 5,000+ year old burial chamber in Oxfordshire. It was built by our Neolithic ancestors to house their dead loved ones.

It lies just a few metres from the Ridgeway, an ancient trackway. It stretches across southern England and was once a major trade route.

It's a place of special significance to me, and perhaps you, too?

A return to a familiar theme

After being unable to paint for four months, I returned to a theme which I first explored with my paint brushes (and my muddy boots!) 25+ years ago: ancient monuments and standing stones. I've been hunting them down all over the world all my life. Bt my local Oxfordshire Neolithic and Bronze age sites call me back often including this one - Wayland’s Smithy long barrow.

So this painting feels to me like a kind of 'visual comfort blanket'. A peep out from under the covers of a glorious place which I adore, built by our ancestors to bring peace. I hope you feel that.

Who was Wayland?

Wayland was the blacksmith of the Norse gods. Legend has it that if a traveller’s horse loses a shoe, s/he can leave their horse and a coin at the barrow overnight for Wayland to reshoe. But only if the traveller doesn’t watch!
