Wild night out in Chapel Meadow is a painting of the field opposite our house in Oxfordshire, inspired by a magical evening sitting quietly surveying the comings and goings of bats.

  • An original painting in watercolour. Size 380mm x 380mm
  • Prints are size 420 x 420mm and coming soon! Pre-order now!
For much of summer 2024, I was engaged in an objection to a proposed housing development in a village meadow. My husband and I were not convinced that the ancient, ivy-covered oak that the developers want to chop down wasn't used by bats.
With advice from a bat expert, a few of us conducted a bat emergence survey of the tree. Armed with bat detectors, we sat quietly in the meadow at dusk and watched. We recorded four different species of bat. And as the full moon rose, heard owls hooting and muntjacs barking, and watched the resident roe deer playing. It was absolutely beautiful!
It's that night magic that I'm trying to convey in this painting, Wild night out in Chapel Meadow.

The wildlife of Chapel Meadow

The meadow is part of an ancient wildlife corridor stretching from Eynsham Hall Park to the west to Pinsley Wood to the east.

Chapel Meadow is managed so sensitively by the tenant farmer. He mows it for hay just once a year, and it has not been ploughed for 20 years. It is full of many species of grasses and has a wide uncut margin of wildflowers attracting a huge number of insects.

We have seen foxes and muntjacs, and we hear tawny owls twit-twooing. Barn owls visit for the small mammals: voles, mice, shrews. There are also bats and squirrels, amphibians and grass snakes. Plus we have identified more than 60 species of bird that use its deep and tangled hedgerows to nest, roost and shelter.

It's a magical meadow now threatened with total annihilation.
