Old Father Thames is an award-winning painting about nature, history, culture, folklore and folk memory.

This painting is the WINNER of the People’s Choice award for the Oxfordshire Museum Open Art Competition 2024

Old Father Thames is a river god, the deity whom every person is England should worship. Why? Because for two millennia, the river Thames has been central to the development of the English nation. It flows through every vein of our history, culture and daily lives.

My painting considers the gifts that Old Father Thames brings

A reliable water supply, habitats for the wild creatures, and a place for humans to thrive. The river Thames has been a vital trade route for centuries. It’s a place for leisure - swimming, fishing, and boating. It’s at the centre of our history, and appears in some of our best-loved literature. Old Father Thames should be nurtured, cherished and profoundly respected!

Birds not turds, fish not filth

But the river Thames is being used as an open sewer, and the powers-that-be ignore this stinking reality. And it’s not just the Thames and its tributaries that are suffering this disgusting horror. It’s every UK waterway. Are you as hopping mad about this as I am?

It requires it political will to fix it. Politicians! Get your sh1t together and fix it urgently!

My painting is a reminder of how Old Father Thames should be. A healthy living space for all, a place of joy and wonder.
